Two of my favourite Toronto rappers, More or Les and Wordburglar, have started a monthly hip hop night at Rancho Relaxo in Toronto, and they’ll be featuring a varied mix of local and out-of-town guests that will always impress. Hand’Solo Records is throwing their support into this worthy series, and hopefully we’ll see you out for the kick off on Wednesday, May 26th when More Or Les, Wordburglar and Smash Bros rock the stage. JazzB and CAPS3 continue their “no sales” model of music dissemination with a combined total of three new discs worth of music. JazzB presents two-parter For.Ever.Great.Full, a collection of instrumentals and odd remixes, while CAPS3’s Pixelate goes the vocal route. As well, their first collection, Creator / Pixel, released one year ago, will get resurrected as a free download on Hand’Solo Records. Check back for that one soon.

More Or Les and Fresh Kils recently released their collaboration EP that is appropriately titled The Les-Kils EP. They’ve just released the video for first single, “Pop N’ Chips”, a party-having posse cut that also features Timbuktu and Ghettosocks. The song is produced by Fresh Kils. The video is directed by Darrell Faria, produced by Mike MacMmillan and edited by Jonathan Eagan. Check it out:
A Backburner album is in the works…
Burg and a bunch of the Backburner boys have started their tour of Eastern Canada and a bit of the States (see below for more info on that), and he’s bringing along a tour CD of b-sides, rarities and remixes (see below for more info on that, too). A few months back, Rhythmicru rapper/producer D-Ray released the third volume in his Supertoke series, his best yet with plenty of great guest vocalists. “We Have Come For Your Children,” arguably one of the best tracks on the album, is the second track to get the video treatment. Directed by Ghostmilk Studio’s Arv Slabosevicius and produced by Bob Rajic for 3AM Design.

On Saturday, March 28, 2009, Wordburglar appeared on CBC Radio’s national Saturday morning show GO, hosted by Brent Brambury. This episode, they were searching for a new alternative Canadian anthem. Burgie, along with two other Canadian musicians, presented their submissions with a live performance.

Wordburglar has been working on this high concept idea about the former ruler of a sinister, snake-based society of snake-inspired terrorists who, failing to rule the globe, must rely on his fallback career, working at a pizza place. The character, and much of the cast of supporting characters, were originally introduced in Snakor’s Pizza Super Special Special and a short run comic ‘zine distributed during Nerdapalooza. Arcana Comics have now stepped on board to help writer/co-creator Wordburglar and his comic partners Kody Peters (pencils/colours) and Dave Howlett (inks/letters) get their satire of G.I. Joe out to the masses by publishing the comic on their site, with the end result hopefully leading to a print edition as a trade paperback or in separate comic form. If you like what you see and read, hit up Arcana and let them know you want to see it in print.
